Personal Alarms for the Elderly: Tunstall Healthcare’s Personal Alarms In Action

See how Tunstall Healthcare’s personal alarms for the elderly work in real life through the stories of Dallas and Tom.

Dallas’ Story: Confidence In Living Alone

Dallas has been living alone in her home for quite some time. Like many seniors, she often worries about the thought of falling down the stairs and nobody being there to help.

“The stairs have always been a bit of a bugbear with me,” said Dallas. “I have always had a horror of falling down these stairs and never having anybody around to pick me up.”

Dallas is not alone in feeling the fear of falling. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 684,000 people worldwide suffer from fatal falls each year. On a more local scope, there’s an estimated 200,000 Australian and 56,000 New Zealand hospitalisations each year due to falls.

 The Solution & Results

Dallas wears a Tunstall Healthcare personal alarm around her neck at all times. To call for help, she only has to press the device’s red button. Upon doing so, she receives a call from Tunstall’s 24/7 Customer Care Centre who asks her if she needs any form of assistance. In turn, the Tunstall agent coordinates the required help.

Ever since Dallas started wearing a Tunstall personal alarm, she feels more empowered to live independently. “It’s given me a lot more confidence to be in the house on my own,” she said.

“I definitely recommend it to anybody who needs assistance in the house or who are on their own… You know you’ll get help from Tunstall straight away,” says Dallas.

Tom’s Story: Assurance Inside and Outside the Home

Tom is an 87-year-old veteran living independently in a small town in Victoria, Australia.

Like Dallas, Tom is also concerned about falling and being unable to get up, especially since he lives alone. “I know people who have fallen over in their yards, and no one knew and they just lay there,” he said.

The Solution

For peace of mind, Tom had a Tunstall personal alarm installed in his home as far back as September 2011, which he qualified for through the Department of Veterans Affairs under the Rehabilitation Appliances Program. His personal alarm system consists of a home device and personal alarm radio pendant worn around the neck equipped with 24-hour monitoring.

Since August 2014, Tom would press his pendant and connect with Tunstall’s 24/7 Customer Care Centre. “What I do, I just call in, and they say ‘good morning Tom,’ and sometimes I say ‘good morning Vietnam’ or something silly. They ask me how I’m going and I say good and I give them a rundown on the weather here and they give me a rundown of the weather in Brisbane,” Tom said as he described a typical call with a Tunstall care agent.

There have been times that Tom forgot to make a call to Tunstall. During these times, he’s comforted by the fact that a Tunstall agent would contact him and ask if he was okay.

The Results

While Tom has never used his pendant alarm to call for emergency help, he highly appreciates the dependable support and ‘lovely’ conversations he has with Tunstall care agents.

Tom’s especially pleased by how fast it is for him to connect to an agent, saying, “As soon as I press the button, the message is through. It’s very good. It’s very fast.”

With a personal alarm radio pendant worn around his neck, Tom always feels safe whenever he roams outside his home. The pendant provides him with the knowledge that he’s protected and in safe hands at all times.

Mobile Personal Alarms for Seniors: 5 Things to Look Out For

There are many personal alarms for seniors in today’s market. With so many available, it can be exhausting to choose. Here are five things you need to check when looking for the best personal alarms for seniors.

1. An excellent personal alarm allows you to call for help easily.

The main function of mobile personal alarms for seniors is to call for help anytime you might need it. When choosing a mobile alarm, find out how the device operates.

Many mobile personal alarms have a call button that’s usually pressed to call for help. It’s either found at the front or side of the device. Find out how easy or hard it would be to press the button. If you find that you’re putting too much effort into clicking, you might want to consider another device.

2. It automatically tracks your location.

Emergencies can happen anywhere. When you get into an accident in an unfamiliar place, it might be hard for you to tell the care agent exactly where you are. This is why it’s important to choose personal alarms for seniors that enable location tracking.

There are many ways a mobile personal alarm tracks your location. Most devices use GPS or Bluetooth to determine your location. Others use a SIM card with 3G and 4G enabled to track where you are. If you’re considering a device that’s powered by a SIM card, make sure the cell service provider covers your area.

3. It is long-lasting, impact- and water-resistant.

The point of having a mobile personal device with you at all times is that it’s able to keep up with your daily activities. Your device should stay on even when you’re outdoors, rain or shine.

It should withstand a reasonable amount of impact, especially if you’re participating in physical activities such as exercising or walking.

More importantly, the mobile personal alarm you choose should have long battery life. Remember, emergencies can happen at any time. Your device should be up and running without any delays.

4. It has 24-hour access to a monitoring centre.

To put your mind at ease, choose mobile personal alarm for seniors with 24-hour access to a care monitoring centre. This way, you’re assured that someone will respond to your call, especially when you need it most.

5. It has a fall detection feature.

The World Health Organization notes that adults aged 60 years and older are among those who suffer the greatest number of fatal falls. Wearing a mobile personal alarm equipped with a fall detection feature can help you survive a fall.

In the event of a fall, your chances of recovering are higher the sooner you get medical assistance. The mobile personal alarm you carry can be just the thing you need to call for help upon falling.
