Personal Alarms for the Elderly: Tunstall Healthcare’s Personal Alarms In Action

See how Tunstall Healthcare’s personal alarms for the elderly work in real life through the stories of Dallas and Tom.

Dallas’ Story: Confidence In Living Alone

Dallas has been living alone in her home for quite some time. Like many seniors, she often worries about the thought of falling down the stairs and nobody being there to help.

“The stairs have always been a bit of a bugbear with me,” said Dallas. “I have always had a horror of falling down these stairs and never having anybody around to pick me up.”

Dallas is not alone in feeling the fear of falling. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 684,000 people worldwide suffer from fatal falls each year. On a more local scope, there’s an estimated 200,000 Australian and 56,000 New Zealand hospitalisations each year due to falls.

 The Solution & Results

Dallas wears a Tunstall Healthcare personal alarm around her neck at all times. To call for help, she only has to press the device’s red button. Upon doing so, she receives a call from Tunstall’s 24/7 Customer Care Centre who asks her if she needs any form of assistance. In turn, the Tunstall agent coordinates the required help.

Ever since Dallas started wearing a Tunstall personal alarm, she feels more empowered to live independently. “It’s given me a lot more confidence to be in the house on my own,” she said.

“I definitely recommend it to anybody who needs assistance in the house or who are on their own… You know you’ll get help from Tunstall straight away,” says Dallas.

Know more about Dallas’ story by watching this video below:

Tom’s Story: Assurance Inside and Outside the Home

Tom is an 87-year-old veteran living independently in a small town in Victoria, Australia.

Like Dallas, Tom is also concerned about falling and being unable to get up, especially since he lives alone. “I know people who have fallen over in their yards, and no one knew and they just lay there,” he said.

The Solution

For peace of mind, Tom had a Tunstall personal alarm installed in his home as far back as September 2011, which he qualified for through the Department of Veterans Affairs under the Rehabilitation Appliances Program. His personal alarm system consists of a home device and personal alarm radio pendant worn around the neck equipped with 24-hour monitoring.

Since August 2014, Tom would press his pendant and connect with Tunstall’s 24/7 Customer Care Centre. “What I do, I just call in, and they say ‘good morning Tom,’ and sometimes I say ‘good morning Vietnam’ or something silly. They ask me how I’m going and I say good and I give them a rundown on the weather here and they give me a rundown of the weather in Brisbane,” Tom said as he described a typical call with a Tunstall care agent.

There have been times that Tom forgot to make a call to Tunstall. During these times, he’s comforted by the fact that a Tunstall agent would contact him and ask if he was okay.

The Results

While Tom has never used his pendant alarm to call for emergency help, he highly appreciates the dependable support and ‘lovely’ conversations he has with Tunstall care agents.

Tom’s especially pleased by how fast it is for him to connect to an agent, saying, “As soon as I press the button, the message is through. It’s very good. It’s very fast.”

With a personal alarm radio pendant worn around his neck, Tom always feels safe whenever he roams outside his home. The pendant provides him with the knowledge that he’s protected and in safe hands at all times.

Mobile Personal Alarms for Seniors: 5 Things to Look Out For

There are many personal alarms for seniors in today’s market. With so many available, it can be exhausting to choose. Here are five things you need to check when looking for the best personal alarms for seniors.

1. An excellent personal alarm allows you to call for help easily.

The main function of mobile personal alarms for seniors is to call for help anytime you might need it. When choosing a mobile alarm, find out how the device operates.

Many mobile personal alarms have a call button that’s usually pressed to call for help. It’s either found at the front or side of the device. Find out how easy or hard it would be to press the button. If you find that you’re putting too much effort into clicking, you might want to consider another device.

2. It automatically tracks your location.

Emergencies can happen anywhere. When you get into an accident in an unfamiliar place, it might be hard for you to tell the care agent exactly where you are. This is why it’s important to choose personal alarms for seniors that enable location tracking.

There are many ways a mobile personal alarm tracks your location. Most devices use GPS or Bluetooth to determine your location. Others use a SIM card with 3G and 4G enabled to track where you are. If you’re considering a device that’s powered by a SIM card, make sure the cell service provider covers your area.

3. It is long-lasting, impact- and water-resistant.

The point of having a mobile personal device with you at all times is that it’s able to keep up with your daily activities. Your device should stay on even when you’re outdoors, rain or shine.

It should withstand a reasonable amount of impact, especially if you’re participating in physical activities such as exercising or walking.

More importantly, the mobile personal alarm you choose should have long battery life. Remember, emergencies can happen at any time. Your device should be up and running without any delays.

4. It has 24-hour access to a monitoring centre.

To put your mind at ease, choose mobile personal alarm for seniors with 24-hour access to a care monitoring centre. This way, you’re assured that someone will respond to your call, especially when you need it most.

5. It has a fall detection feature.

The World Health Organization notes that adults aged 60 years and older are among those who suffer the greatest number of fatal falls. Wearing a mobile personal alarm equipped with a fall detection feature can help you survive a fall.

In the event of a fall, your chances of recovering are higher the sooner you get medical assistance. The mobile personal alarm you carry can be just the thing you need to call for help upon falling.

Tunstall GO: The Best Personal Alarm For Seniors

Making Tunstall Healthcare’s Personal Alarms in Australia More Accessible Through Personal AlertSA

Tunstall Healthcare’s personal alarms and monitoring solutions are made available to more Australians, specifically those who live in South Australia, through Personal AlertSA (PASA). Here’s what you need to know about personal alarms in South Australia and how you can start applying for PASA.

What is Personal AlertSA?

Personal AlertSA is a government project funded by South Australia that aims to improve eligible South Australians’ access to personal alarms and monitoring solutions. Through the initiative, the South Australian Government aspires to improve the lives of its constituents who need long-term medical assistance.

Personal alarms and monitoring solutions are compact, handy devices people can easily carry around. These devices allow their wearers to call for help during accidents or emergencies. They are widely used by many Australians, as these devices empower people to live independently and safely in a place of their choosing.

Can I get a personal alarm through PASA?

Aside from being a South Australian resident, you have to meet a few requirements to be eligible for a personal alarm through PASA. You are also required to be at least 75 years, and you must also have a Centrelink or Department of Veterans’ Affairs Pensioner Concession card.

In addition to the three items above, you must also be assessed and approved by My Aged Care for the following four items:

1. Commonwealth Home Support Programme
2. Level 1 Home Care Package
3. Level 2-4 HCP and not assigned an interim HCP
4. Not eligible for an HCP

What are the Tunstall devices available through PASA?

At Tunstall Healthcare, we’re happy to provide South Australians with two personal alarms through PASA.

Tunstall Gem4: 4G GPS Pendant

The Tunstall Gem4 is a handy, monitored personal alarm for seniors we’ve designed to make calling for help easy, whenever and wherever it’s needed.

Tunstall Gem4 features an easy call button that alerts our 24/7 Customer Care Team once it is engaged. The alarm’s GPS tracker sends your location to our care agent, who will use it to direct the necessary emergency units straight to you.

Tunstall SmartLink Medi Guardian 4G: 4G Base Unit and Pendant

The Tunstall SmartLink Guardian 4G is a home-based alarm. We will install it in your house so you can access help any time you need it.

Simply press the device’s Help button if you need assistance. You will immediately be connected to our 24/7 Customer Care Centre, which will send help right away. The SmartLink Guardian 4G can also be connected to our Smartfall Blue pendant—our personal alarm equipped with a fall detection feature.

How do I apply for a personal alarm via PASA?

The South Australian Government outlined five steps you need to accomplish to apply for a personal alarm via PASA:

1. Fill out the application form: Download, print, and fill out the 8-page Personal AlertSA form here.
2. Contact My Aged Care: Have yourself assessed and cleared for aged care services.
3. Have your form signed by a registered health professional: Set a consultation with your physician or occupational therapist, who will certify Section G of the application form.
4. Compile all requirements: Make sure you have your Centrelink Customer Reference Number or DVA file number and My Aged Care (AC ID).
5. Send your application to PASA: Email your application to pasa@sa.gov.au or send it by post to Personal AlertSA with address at Reply Paid 292, Adelaide SA 5001.

What Is a Fall Detector Pendant Alarm and How Does It Work?

Fall and fall-related injuries affect many elderly Australians each year. If you’re a senior who lives alone or are worried about getting help when you need it, carrying a pendant alarm can put your mind at ease. Read the article below to learn more about fall detector pendant alarms and how they work.

In this article:

●What is a fall detector pendant alarm?
●How does a fall detector pendant alarm work?
●Who are fall detector pendant alarms made for?

What is a fall detector pendant alarm?

A fall detector pendant alarm is a compact, lightweight device that automatically senses when the wearer slips or falls over. Once the device detects a fall, it’ll raise an alarm, automatically contacting a 24/7 Customer Care team to assist you. In addition to the automatic trigger, many pendant alarms also have a call button you can press any time you need help.

Important note: falls, accidents and other emergencies can happen at any time of day. When you’re deciding on the best pendant alarm, make sure that the service provider offers round-the-clock assistance, like Tunstall Healthcare’s 24/7 Customer Care team, who are ready to take your call and assist at any time of the day.

How does a fall detector pendant alarm work?

Most fall detector pendant alarms work the same way. They can be worn around your neck (like a lanyard) or wrist (as a bracelet). Some can even be hooked on your belt or pinned on your shirt (like a brooch!).

These devices are equipped with sensors that can detect quick and sudden changes in your position, usually indicating a slip or fall. Some even have sensors that can gauge how severe your fall is!

Once the pendant alarm detects a fall, it will alert a partner customer care team that will assess your situation and send the necessary help your way. Many of today’s fall detectors also have GPS that helps emergency units pinpoint your exact location.

Pendant alarms are also useful even when you don’t encounter a fall. Many of today’s devices have a call button you can use to manually send an alert to the same 24/7 Customer Care team anytime you need help, have an accident, or feel unsafe.

What happens in the case of a false alarm? Different pendant alarms have their own ways of cancelling false alerts. Some may require you to double press the call button or cover a sensor to stop the alarm from connecting to customer care. Make sure to read the pendant’s user guide to know exactly how this is done for your particular device.

Who are fall detector pendant alarms made for?

Fall detector pendant alarms are made to ensure the wearer’s safety. As such, anyone can use them! But they’re handy for people who have:

●Limited mobility
●Disabilities
●Cognitive illnesses
●Medical conditions
●Advanced age or elderly
●Isolated or dangerous work duties (lone workers)

When should I be wearing a fall detector pendant alarm?

Ideally, fall detector pendants should be worn at all times.

This is because accidents like falls and slips can happen at any time and anywhere. In fact, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2019 Falls Report noted that 100,000 people aged 65 and over were hospitalised due to a fall from 2016 to 2017 alone!

While accidents can’t be 100% avoided, a fall detector pendant alarm can get you the help you need that much faster. The sooner you call for help, the higher your chances of making a full recovery.

So, whether you’re at home or on the go, you can keep your mind at ease and secure your safety when you have a fall detector pendant alarm on you at all times.

Put Your Mind at Ease with a Tunstall Fall Detector Pendant Alarm

At Tunstall Healthcare, we’ve dedicated ourselves to helping people with short- and long-term health needs to live safely and independently. Tunstall Healthcare’s Connected Care: Here’s What It’s All About

At Tunstall Healthcare, we’re passionate about providing patients with tailored healthcare solutions through modern-day technology in a model we call Connected Care. Learn more about Tunstall’s Connected Care model and how it works by reading the article below!

In this article:

●What is Connected Care?
●How does Connected Care work?
●What does it mean to be a Connected Person?

Understanding Tunstall’s Connected Care Model: 3 FAQs answered!

What is Connected Care?

Tunstall Healthcare’s concept of Connected Care uses devices or solutions that link people with their healthcare providers. Examples of these solutions include remote monitoring devices and round-the-clock support services.

Through Connected Care, doctors and health care providers remotely access their patients’ records and check-up on them via smart devices and monitoring solutions. This is especially useful for patients who have limited access to healthcare, or aren’t able to be seen on a regular basis due to distance, condition, or other circumstances. Connected Care makes accessing healthcare that much easier because of devices and solutions that facilitate remote care.

Tunstall’s Connected Care and Connected Health services also transmit data to Tunstall’s ICP myMobile application. Key insights regarding a person’s health can be analysed here, either by the person’s carer or by the person themselves. This allows people to stay on top of their condition, empowering them to control their own care.

The accuracy and timeliness of this data allows health care providers to diagnose patients more efficiently and create treatment plans tailored to a person’s specific symptoms. Early diagnosis also keeps a patient’s condition from worsening. In the long run, this can save patients from making multiple trips to the doctor, and improve the overall quality of their care.

How does Connected Care work?

Connected Care is a system that connects patients and carers through modern healthcare solutions. These solutions include individual devices and sensors patients like you can carry around wherever you go or installed right in your home.

These devices are often equipped with sensors to detect when you fall, slip, or have a seizure. Once they detect this, the device triggers an alarm that alerts Tunstall’s 24/7 Customer Care team. One of our representatives will contact you, assess your situation, and send the necessary emergency units your way. Some devices also allow you to manually call for help, giving you the chance to live independently yet securely as possible.

What does it mean to be a Connected Person?

A Connected Person is someone who is part of Tunstall’s Connected Care system. Being part of the Connected Care system allows you to access health support and assistance whenever you need it. This is done through Tunstall Healthcare’s wide array of monitoring solutions which include:

●Home Alarms: Smart Hub, Liberty300, Tunstall SmartLink Guardian 4G

Personal Emergency Alarms: What They Are and Where to Get the Best One

Accidents can happen to anyone at any time, including you. One of the best ways to secure your safety is through personal emergency alarms. Read on to know what they are and where to get the best one that suits your needs.

In this article:

●What are personal emergency alarms?
●How do personal emergency alarms work?
●Who are they made for?
●How do I know if I need one?
●Where do I get the best personal emergency alarms?

What are personal emergency alarms?

Personal safety alarms are compact devices you can conveniently carry around your neck or wrist or keep in your pocket or bag. They’re designed to call for help on your behalf during an emergency.

Most personal safety alarms have a call button that will connect you to an emergency hotline when pressed. Other devices have added features that can detect falls. Once they detect these, the device triggers an alert and warns a monitoring team that will send the necessary help to you.

How do personal emergency alarms work?

If you ever feel unwell, unsafe or get involved in an accident, you simply press the device’s call button. Pressing the button alerts a response team who will assess your situation, pinpoint your location, and send the necessary help to you. This might include your dedicated carer, family member, or emergency services.

Other personal alarms such as the Tunstall GO fall pendant and Emfit Epilepsy Detector are designed to recognize quick and sudden changes in your movement. As soon as they sense these changes, the devices send an alert to a 24/7 response team that will send help right away.

Who are personal alarms made for?

Personal emergency alarms are useful for many people. These devices help many Australians work and live independently, safely, and with confidence. You can definitely benefit from a personal alarm if you are:

●Elderly
●A lone worker
●Living independently
●Living with a disability or chronic illness
●Recently discharged from hospital care and in need of support

How do I know if I need one?

The key benefit of owning a personal emergency alarm is peace of mind knowing you can call for help whenever and wherever you need it. These devices are beneficial when you’re a senior but still want to live an independent life. Accidents like falls can happen at any time, and you’ll need all the support you can get when that happens.

Suppose you’re living with a disability or chronic illness. In that case, personal emergency alarms can help connect you to an emergency response team when you suffer from sudden attacks. Because you’re able to call for help right away, your chances of making a full recovery will increase.

Personal emergency alarms are also beneficial if you’re a lone worker who has little to no contact with others as you go on the daily grind. Your company is legally obligated to provide a secure working environment for you. Having a personal emergency alarm on you while at work is an excellent extra step in securing your workplace safety.

Where do I get the best personal emergency alarms?

Personal emergency alarms may be small by design. Still, they can have a significant impact on your overall health and safety. Whether you’re looking out for your health or living independently, there are various great alarms available to you.

At Tunstall Healthcare, we believe that everyone has the freedom to live life to the full in the place of their choice. As such, we’ve dedicated ourselves to developing the best personal emergency alarms and monitoring devices for all types of individual and healthcare needs.

Make Sure You Bring These 5 Things to Your NDIS Provider Planning Meeting!

Looking for your perfect NDIS Provider? Make the most out of your National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) planning meeting by being prepared. Before going into the meeting, make sure you have the five things listed below with you!

Here Are 5 Things You Need to Bring to Your NDIS Provider Planning Meeting

1/ Your support person

Did you know that you’re allowed to bring your support person (or people!) to your NDIS planning meeting? Many NDIS representatives know that healthcare planning has its challenges, and you may need someone you trust to be with you when this happens. You can go to the meeting with a family member, friend, or caregiver.

NOTE: Bringing a support person isn’t mandatory during meetings. If you’re not comfortable bringing anyone else to your NDIS planning meeting, you can always go alone.

2/ Your medical documents

It’s essential to bring your medical documents to all your NDIS provider planning meetings. These documents will give the NDIS representative an accurate picture of your condition. Doing so also ensures that the NDIS provider can help make a healthcare plan that truly addresses your needs.

Examples of documents you’ll want to bring include:

●Client Support Plan (CSP)
●Lifestyle Plan
●Health Support Plan
●Behaviour Support Plan
●Therapy Assessment,
●Letters from your doctor, therapist, caregiver, and/or family member talk about your medical condition and the supports you need.

3/ Your healthcare need and goals

You need to go into your NDIS provider planning meeting with your needs and goals in mind. Like those medical documents, your health needs and goals help the NDIS representative handle your healthcare plan moving forward. It’s also important to note that NDIS plans are crafted based on your goals. As such, the supports they’ll provide would only be funded if they help you achieve your health goals.

4/ A summary of your daily activities and supports

It’s extremely helpful, both for you and your NDIS planner, to take to your meeting a detailed list of your day-to-day activities. Narrating your daily routine is another way of describing your medical condition, how it affects your activities and the necessary supports you need.

You should take time to sit and list down what your daily routine is like. If you need help, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has a planning booklet that’ll help you flesh out what happens in your typical day.

Don’t forget to think about how you get around your home, neighborhood, and frequently visited places, the supports you’re currently available, and any other supports such as personal care and daily meals.

5/ A list of honest questions

Fully understanding an NDIS plan can take time. Understandably, you’ll have tons of questions even before you go into the NDIS planning meeting. So, it’s absolutely okay for you to go into an appointment with a list of questions you may have about your NDIS plan. Once you’re in the meeting, you can give the NDIS representative your list of questions, and they should be able to answer each one.

Tunstall Healthcare: Your Registered NDIS Provider

Because we are committed to supporting all our clients’ independence and safety, we provide an array of monitoring devices, including personal alarms, fall detectors, and more, complete with around-the-clock monitoring services that ensure your safety and peace of mind at any time.
